The federal agency responsible for overseeing schools on Native American reservations has reported a record high in on-time high school graduations. According to newly released data, the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) saw its graduation rate climb to an all-time peak, marking a significant turnaround for a system that has long struggled with low student achievement and chronic underfunding.
Officials attribute the improvement to a combination of targeted interventions, including increased mental health support, updated classroom materials, and stronger partnerships with tribal communities. The data shows that more students are finishing high school within four years, a metric that has historically lagged behind national averages. In some BIE-operated schools, the graduation rate jumped by double digits over the past few years.
The progress is notable given the challenges these schools face. Many are located in remote areas with limited access to resources, and students often deal with poverty and historical trauma. Advocates say the rise in graduation rates is a positive sign, but they caution that more work remains. Funding gaps still exist, and the agency must continue to address attendance and college readiness. For now, the numbers offer a rare piece of good news for a system that has often been criticized for failing its students.
