Freddie Hendricks, a middle school theater teacher at Utopian Academy for the Arts, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Excellence in Theatre Education Tony Award. The honor, presented by the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University, recognizes an educator who has demonstrated a profound impact on the lives of students and the broader theater community.
Hendricks has spent over a decade building a drama program at the small charter school, turning a modest classroom into a launchpad for young performers. Colleagues describe his approach as both rigorous and deeply personal, often using original student-written pieces to explore complex social issues. His students have gone on to perform at regional festivals and, in some cases, secure spots at competitive arts high schools and colleges.
The award comes with a cash prize and a trip to New York City, where Hendricks will be celebrated during the 2026 Tony Awards ceremony. In a statement, he credited his students for pushing him to be a better teacher every day. "They show up ready to tell stories that matter," he said. "I just help them find the stage."
Hendricks will be formally honored at the Tonys in June, joining a list of past recipients who have been recognized for transforming theater education at the grassroots level.
