The U.S. Department of Education is facing a growing wave of financial fraud involving so-called "ghost students" - fake enrollees used to siphon federal aid money. These schemes have become more sophisticated, with scammers now using artificial intelligence to evade detection.
Fox News correspondent David Spunt reported that fraudsters create entire fake student profiles, complete with fabricated enrollment records and financial aid applications. The goal is to collect Pell Grants and federal student loans that are never meant to be repaid. In some cases, the same fake student is enrolled at multiple institutions simultaneously, a red flag that has overwhelmed traditional oversight systems.
The problem has escalated in recent years, partly due to the rapid expansion of online education during the pandemic. Schools that rely heavily on remote enrollment are particularly vulnerable. Investigators say AI tools allow scammers to generate realistic documents and even mimic human behavior during verification calls, making it harder for auditors to spot the fraud.
The Education Department has launched new initiatives to tighten verification processes and share data across institutions. But critics argue the agency is still playing catch-up. With billions of taxpayer dollars at stake, the battle against ghost students is far from over. Officials warn that as technology evolves, so will the tactics of those looking to exploit the system.
