Ingham County Voters to Weigh $100 Million Special Education Bond in May 5 Election

Ingham County Voters to Weigh $100 Million Special Education Bond in May 5 Election

Residents of Ingham County will head to the polls on May 5 to decide the fate of a nearly $100 million bond proposal aimed at transforming special education facilities within the Ingham Intermediate School District (ISD). The bond, if approved, would fund the complete demolition and reconstruction of the Beekman Center, a critical facility serving students with significant disabilities, as well as major updates to the Heartwood School in Mason.

The Beekman Center, which has been in operation for decades, is described by district officials as outdated and no longer able to meet the modern educational and therapeutic needs of its students. The proposed rebuild would create a state-of-the-art facility designed with accessibility, safety, and specialized learning environments in mind. Meanwhile, the Heartwood School in Mason would receive renovations to improve its infrastructure, including upgrades to classrooms, therapy spaces, and common areas.

District leaders emphasize that the bond would not raise taxes beyond the current rate, as existing debt is set to expire. They argue the investment is essential to provide equitable, high-quality education for students with special needs across the county. Opponents, however, have raised concerns about the scale of spending and long-term fiscal responsibility.

The May 5 election will be a pivotal moment for families, educators, and taxpayers, as the outcome will shape the future of special education services in Ingham County for decades to come.
