This spring, a group of Skagway high schoolers made the trek to Washington D.C. to get an up-close look at how government works. It’s the first time in recent memory that students from this small Alaskan town have traveled nearly 4,000 miles to engage directly with the nation's political landscape. The trip was designed to provide students with a firsthand experience of the democratic process, allowing them to witness the inner workings of government institutions.
During their visit, the students participated in various educational activities, including tours of the Capitol building and meetings with local representatives. These experiences aimed to deepen their understanding of civic engagement and inspire them to become active participants in their own communities. The students expressed excitement about the opportunity to learn about the legislative process, meet with policymakers, and discuss important issues facing the country.
This initiative not only broadens their educational horizons but also fosters a sense of responsibility and connection to the democratic system, highlighting the importance of youth involvement in governance.
