AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas State Board of Education is locked in a contentious debate over a proposed overhaul of public school curriculum that would significantly increase instruction on civic engagement, patriotism, and Christianity while scaling back lessons on world history, cultural diversity, and race.
The proposal, which has drawn sharp reactions from educators and advocacy groups, aims to reframe how students learn about American history and government. Supporters argue the changes are necessary to restore a sense of national pride and foundational values. They say the current curriculum has become too focused on social issues and negative aspects of the country's past.
Opponents, however, warn the shift would erase critical perspectives and leave students unprepared for a globalized world. They point to the reduced emphasis on world history and the study of diverse cultures as a step backward. The plan also downplays discussions of systemic racism and the historical experiences of minority groups, which critics say is an attempt to whitewash difficult chapters of American history.
Board members have held several heated hearings, with testimony from teachers, historians, and religious leaders. Some educators have expressed concern that the new framework could violate the separation of church and state by promoting Christian teachings in public classrooms. Others worry it will leave students with a narrow, one-sided view of the nation's past.
The board is expected to vote on the final version of the curriculum in the coming months. The outcome will affect textbook standards and classroom instruction across Texas, one of the largest textbook markets in the country, meaning the decision could influence educational content nationwide.
