What some conservatives get wrong about college

A common critique from conservative circles holds that American colleges are little more than left-leaning echo chambers, indoctrinating students with progressive dogma while stamping out dissent. While there is certainly room to critique campus culture, this broad dismissal misses the fundamental value of higher education. The real purpose of college is not to feed students a set of approved beliefs, but to teach them how to think critically and take responsibility for their own convictions.

In a healthy academic environment, students are exposed to a wide range of viewpoints, including those they find uncomfortable or offensive. The goal is not to make them adopt a specific ideology, but to equip them with the tools to defend their own ideas against rigorous challenge. This process builds intellectual humility and resilience. A graduate who has debated a professor or a peer over a deeply held belief is far better prepared for civic life than one who has only ever heard their own views echoed back.

By empowering students to own their beliefs, colleges produce citizens who can actively participate in the marketplace of ideas. They learn to argue with evidence, listen to opposing views, and change their minds when warranted. That is the opposite of indoctrination. It is the foundation of a functioning democracy. Conservatives who dismiss all of higher education as a lost cause risk overlooking the very institutions that can help produce the thoughtful, principled leaders they claim to want.
