The Alaska Legislature has approved a measure that will require the state to create formal guidelines for mental health education in public schools. The bill, which now heads to the governor's desk, directs the Alaska Department of Education to develop a framework for teaching students about emotional well-being, coping strategies, and recognizing signs of mental distress.
Supporters of the plan say it is a long-overdue step to address a growing crisis among young Alaskans. Suicide rates in the state have consistently ranked among the highest in the nation, and school officials have reported rising numbers of students struggling with anxiety and depression. The new guidelines will not mandate a specific curriculum but will instead offer a set of standards that local school districts can adapt to their communities.
Lawmakers stressed that the instruction is meant to be age-appropriate and evidence-based. Topics could include how to manage stress, how to seek help for oneself or a friend, and how to reduce the stigma around mental health care. The bill passed with bipartisan support after several years of debate over how to introduce such sensitive material into classrooms without overstepping local control.
The Alaska Department of Education will have until the end of the next school year to finalize the guidelines. Once approved, districts will be encouraged to begin integrating the lessons into existing health classes or advisory periods.
