Dozens of teachers, parents, and community members gathered outside the Austin Independent School District headquarters on Tuesday for a rally organized by Education Austin. The demonstration called for greater openness in the district's budget process and pushed back against proposed cuts that could affect classrooms across the city.
Speakers at the event argued that public schools belong to the entire community, and that residents deserve a clear explanation of where cuts would begin. "When budget reductions are on the table, the public has a right to know exactly what is being considered," one organizer told the crowd. The rally was part of a broader effort to protect school programs and staffing levels ahead of the district's final budget vote.
Education Austin, the local teachers union, has been vocal about the need for transparency as AISD faces a significant budget shortfall. The group is urging district leaders to hold more public forums and release detailed breakdowns of proposed spending changes before any final decisions are made.
Parents in attendance expressed frustration with what they described as a lack of communication from the school board. Several carried signs reading "Our Schools, Our Say" and "Fund Our Future." The rally ended with a march around the building, with chants calling for accountability.
The district has acknowledged the financial challenges but has not yet released a finalized plan for cuts. AISD officials said they are still reviewing options and will present a proposal at the next board meeting.
