CT special education advocates slam Trump Ed Dept. moves: an ‘assassination attempt’

Connecticut special education advocates are pushing back hard against recent moves by the U.S. Department of Education under the Trump administration, describing them as a direct threat to students with disabilities. The criticism follows a proposal by Education Secretary Linda McMahon to shift enforcement of key federal laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, to other government agencies. McMahon argued that the restructuring would protect special education by streamlining oversight and reducing bureaucratic overlap.

But advocates in Connecticut see it differently. They say the plan would gut the legal protections that guarantee a free and appropriate public education for millions of students. One advocate called the move an "assassination attempt" on the civil rights framework that has supported disabled students for decades. The concern is that moving enforcement to agencies like Health and Human Services or the Justice Department would dilute accountability and leave families with fewer avenues to challenge violations.

Local parent groups and disability rights organizations worry the shift would create confusion and delays in resolving disputes over services like speech therapy, behavioral support, and classroom accommodations. They also fear that without a dedicated education agency overseeing compliance, schools may feel less pressure to meet federal standards. Several Connecticut lawmakers have joined the advocates, urging the state to prepare for potential fallout. For now, the debate highlights a growing divide between federal policy changes and the real-world concerns of families who rely on these protections every day.
