Voters heading to the polls Tuesday will weigh in on more than just school board races and general tax proposals. Two notable local issues are drawing attention: a millage renewal for the Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency, or KRESA, and a heated debate over trash-hauling services in the city of Portage.
The KRESA special education millage is a renewal request, not a new tax. It supports programs for students with disabilities across nine local school districts. The funding helps cover costs for specialized instruction, therapy services, and transportation that individual districts might struggle to afford on their own. Officials say the millage has been in place for years and is critical for maintaining current levels of support. Without it, some services could face cuts or require districts to raise money elsewhere.
In Portage, the question is about trash. The city is asking voters to approve an exclusive franchise agreement for residential waste collection. Supporters argue it would lower costs, reduce truck traffic, and improve recycling rates. Opponents say it eliminates choice and could lead to higher fees down the road. The debate has been lively, with signs and mailers urging residents to vote either for or against the measure.
Both issues hinge on voter turnout, which is often lower in off-year elections. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
