The Wake County school system is taking a measured approach to artificial intelligence, revising its proposed policy on generative AI ahead of a planned launch in the fall of 2026. Officials say the updated framework will be one of the most detailed among school districts in the region, addressing both classroom use and ethical concerns.
Later this year, the district will begin training teachers on how to work with generative AI tools. The goal is to prepare educators before the policy takes full effect, giving them hands-on experience with the technology and its potential applications in lesson planning, grading, and student assignments.
The revised policy focuses on transparency and academic integrity. It outlines when students can use AI for research or drafting, and when such use would be considered a violation of school rules. Teachers will also receive guidance on how to detect AI-generated work and how to adjust assignments to encourage original thinking.
District leaders say the policy is designed to evolve as the technology changes. They have held multiple public meetings to gather input from parents, teachers, and students. While some community members have raised concerns about cheating and data privacy, others see AI as a tool that could help personalize learning and reduce teacher workload.
The fall 2026 target gives the district time to test the policy in a few pilot schools before expanding it district-wide. Officials expect to release a final version of the policy by early next year.
