West Virginia's education department has joined forces with Marshall University to create a new aviation pathway for K-12 students. The program, set to begin this fall, will first roll out in five pilot counties across the state. The goal is to give young students early exposure to careers in aviation, from piloting and aircraft maintenance to engineering and airport management.
The partnership aims to address a growing demand for skilled workers in the aviation industry. By introducing aviation concepts early, educators hope to spark interest and build a pipeline of future professionals. The curriculum will be tailored to different grade levels, with hands-on activities and coursework designed to prepare students for further study or direct entry into the workforce after high school.
Marshall University, which already offers aviation programs at the college level, will provide support and resources to help schools develop the pathway. The five pilot counties were chosen based on their readiness and interest in launching the program. Officials say they plan to expand the initiative to more schools across West Virginia if the pilot proves successful.
The announcement comes as the state looks for new ways to boost career readiness and keep talented young people in West Virginia. Aviation offers high-paying jobs and opportunities for advancement, making it an attractive option for students and families. The program is expected to include field trips, guest speakers, and potential internships with local airports and aviation companies.
For now, the focus is on getting the pilot counties up and running. Teachers will receive training over the summer, and the first classes are scheduled to begin when the new school year starts in the fall.
