White Working-Class Pupils Let Down by Schools, Report Finds

White Working-Class Pupils Let Down by Schools, Report Finds

An independent inquiry has concluded that the education system is systematically failing white working-class children in England. After speaking with thousands of young people, their parents, and hundreds of teachers, the report paints a bleak picture of entrenched disadvantage and low expectations.

The investigation found that these pupils are often overlooked in favor of other disadvantaged groups, with schools and policymakers focusing attention elsewhere. Many white working-class students leave school without basic qualifications, and the gap between their performance and that of their peers from other backgrounds has barely narrowed in years.

Parents told researchers they felt their children were written off early, with teachers assuming they would not pursue higher education or skilled careers. The inquiry also highlighted a lack of role models and limited access to extracurricular activities that could broaden horizons.

The report calls for a fundamental shift in how schools and the government approach this issue. Recommendations include better training for teachers to understand the specific challenges these students face, more funding for schools in deprived areas, and a renewed focus on vocational routes as well as academic ones. Without urgent action, the inquiry warns, a generation of young people will continue to be left behind, widening social divides and wasting potential.
