PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. - The Calvert County Board of Education signed off on more than $600,000 in new spending during its August 13 meeting, covering everything from weapons detection to a new way for families to get updates. The biggest single item was a three-year deal worth $299,625 for VMware Cloud Foundation, a system that keeps the district's servers and data centers running smoothly. That move is meant to shore up the behind-the-scenes tech that schools rely on daily.
On the safety side, the board approved funding for weapons detection systems, a step that adds another layer of protection at school entrances. The district is also rolling out a fresh family communications platform, which should make it easier for parents to get alerts and messages in one place. It replaces older tools that were harder to navigate.
The board did not stop at security and software. It also set aside money for technology services and new seating for the Calvert Planetarium, giving the popular community space a much-needed refresh. The total package tops $600,000, and officials say the purchases line up with long-range goals for modernizing classrooms and tightening campus security. No tax increase is tied to the spending, as the funds come from the district's existing operating budget. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for September, where members will review additional capital requests.
