ST. MARY'S COUNTY, Md. - Republican candidate J.W. Abney says rising costs, housing shortages, and preserving Southern Maryland's rural character are the main issues driving his campaign for Maryland House of Delegates District 29C. He laid out his views during a recent appearance on a local politics podcast.
Abney argued that state tax policies are pushing residents out. He said the cost of living has become too high for working families and young people who want to stay in the region. He called for tax relief and a more business-friendly approach to keep local dollars in the community.
On housing, Abney acknowledged the need for more options but warned against overdevelopment. He said the area should not lose its identity to sprawling subdivisions. Instead, he supports smart growth that respects the rural landscape and existing infrastructure.
Education was another focus. Abney emphasized the need to support teachers and give parents more say in their children's schooling. He criticized what he called top-down mandates from Annapolis and said local school boards should have more control.
Abney is running for the seat currently held by a Democrat. He framed his campaign as a fight to protect Southern Maryland's way of life while addressing practical concerns like taxes and affordability. He said voters are tired of being ignored by leaders in the state capital and want someone who understands the local culture and challenges.
