Students in the Automotive Department at the Hamlin Education Center are getting a new, practical learning tool. The Hamlin County Sheriff's Office recently donated a retired patrol vehicle to the school. The car, which served on county roads for years, will now be used to teach students about vehicle maintenance and repair.
Sheriff's officials said the vehicle was in good working order but had reached the end of its service life for law enforcement duties. Rather than sending it to auction or salvage, they decided to give it to the education center. The donation gives students a chance to work on a real, full-sized car with the kind of systems they will encounter in professional shops.
The Automotive Department plans to use the patrol car for hands-on lessons. Students will learn about engine diagnostics, brake systems, suspension work, and electrical troubleshooting. Instructors said having a complete vehicle allows them to teach skills that are hard to cover with just parts or simulators.
The sheriff's office noted that the donation is a way to support local education and give back to the community. They hope the car helps students gain the experience they need to start careers in the automotive field. The Hamlin Education Center thanked the sheriff's office for the gift and said it will be put to good use in the classroom.
