The annual United for Education partnership between UC Santa Barbara and United Way of Santa Barbara County has quietly built something remarkable over three decades. Since its start, the campaign has raised $3.1 million, with every dollar going straight to local programs that serve children and families across the county.
What makes this effort different is how it works. Instead of asking for large donations or corporate sponsorships, the campaign focuses on small, consistent contributions from UCSB faculty, staff, and retirees. Payroll deductions, campus events, and volunteer hours add up fast. Last year alone, hundreds of campus employees signed up to give a few dollars per paycheck, and the total reached well over $100,000.
The money supports a range of services. Some funds go to after-school tutoring and literacy programs. Other portions help provide school supplies, mental health resources, and early childhood education for low-income families. United Way of Santa Barbara County handles distribution, making sure the funds reach organizations that have proven track records.
Organizers say the real impact goes beyond the dollar amount. The campaign builds a culture of giving on campus, where people see that their small choices matter. A five-dollar monthly donation might not feel like much, but when thousands of people do it together, it changes lives.
This year's campaign runs through the end of the semester. Anyone at UCSB can join by signing up online or attending one of the campus events. No gift is too small, and every contribution stays local.
